Mariusz Jop ahead of #TYCWIS: “We’re prepared for all scenarios”

Wisła Kraków’s next opponent in the 3rd round of the Betclic 1 Liga is GKS Tychy. The match kicks off on Monday, August 4 at 19:00. Ahead of the clash, Head Coach Mariusz Jop met with journalists at the pre-match press conference.

Due to health issues, the following players will not be available for Monday’s game: Anton Chichkan (ankle injury),  Kacper Skrobański,  Piotr Starzyński, Bartosz Talar, Alan Uryga (all undergoing rehabilitation), Bartosz Jaroch, who recently underwent surgery and will be out for several months.

On the positive side, Wiktor Staszak and Igor Łasicki have returned to full training.

With several defenders sidelined, how does Jop plan to shape the backline? “We’ve explored a few less obvious solutions – like moving Joseph Colley or Dario Grujić to full-back positions. Joseph hasn’t played there before, but in our system, there are some overlapping patterns, and it’s an option. Dario, on the other hand, has experience playing left-back, so he’s also a possibility,” Jop explained.

“We’ve tested both Joseph and Dario in those roles during training sessions,” he added.

Reflecting on their last clash with Tychy in May, Jop said: “That spring match is ancient history in football terms. A lot has changed since then. Of course, we always prepare a few surprises. We're ready for different match scenarios and styles of play, but above all, what matters most is that we’re effective.”

Both Wisła and Tychy have two wins from two and the winner on Monday will go top of the league. When asked if this will be Wisła’s toughest challenge so far: “I don’t see it that way. This league has shown that every game is tough – there are no easy opponents. Tychy have been in great form from the start. Coach Skowronek has done a fantastic job – despite many changes, the team has maintained its identity, vision, and attacking intensity. Sure, they have weaknesses, and we’ve prepared our analysis to exploit them, or rather, to make the most of our own strengths.”

Tychy’s squad has undergone several changes since last season. How does the coach assess them now? “Yes, a number of players have left, and some interesting new names have come in. Hard to say if they’re stronger, that’s something you’d need to ask Coach Skowronek. But tactically, they’ve retained a similar structure. They’re still strong in possession, solid defensively, and play with high intensity. They showed in the first two games they’ll be title contenders.”

The upcoming fixture is also symbolic: two years ago, Wisła fans began to face widespread stadium bans, starting with a match in Tychy. This time, however, they’ll be allowed to attend. “It’s really good to see the association (PZPN) take strong action, because the club has always pushed for this. I’m happy our fans can be there. Hopefully this is a turning point and from now on they’ll be able to support us on the road. That’s incredibly important for us.”

Both teams have played 17 league matches in 2025: GKS Tychy: 39 points Wisła Kraków: 38 points Are these the league’s best sides right now? “The stats say they’re the most effective teams this year. These are clubs that have learned how to get results in this very unique league.”

Currently, Wisła sits second, just behind Tychy in the 2025 form table. “Let’s hope we overtake them in that ranking after Monday. We know it’ll be a tough match, but we’re ready,” Jop concluded.
