2024 was an incredibly successful year for the Wisła Kraków AMP Football section. Domestically, Biała Gwiazda demonstrated excellent form, while achieving their best-ever result in the UEFA Champions League. Moreover, players from the club played a significant role in the national team’s success. Here's a summary!
Domestic Success
The season began in Wrocław with Wisła Kraków’s strong 5:0 victory over Stal Rzeszów. The team continued their excellent form in the PZU Amp Futbol Ekstraklasa, winning all subsequent matches, including victories against Pokrowa Lwów and Śląsk Wrocław.
In Boguchwała, the defending champions kicked off their season in spectacular fashion, beating Radomiak Radom 7:0. The toughest match came against TSP Podbeskidzie Kuloodporni Bielsko-Biała. After a hard-fought game, Wisła triumphed 2:1, with goals from Kamil Grygiel and Kamil Rośek, becoming the sole leaders of the league.
Wisła Kraków continued to fight for the top spot throughout the season, with the ultimate goal of defending their championship title. The team succeeded in doing so at the sixth league tournament in Poznań. Despite a draw with Śląsk Wrocław, the team bounced back with victories over Podbeskidzie and Warta Poznań, securing their place as league champions.
Historic Champions League Victory
The Amp Futbol section of Wisła Kraków, having already claimed the domestic championship, took part in the UEFA Champions League. Their goal was to win the tournament, but the competition was fierce. In the first match, Wisła faced Turkish favourites Sahinbey. With remarkable determination, they won the match, setting the tone for the rest of the tournament. The team finished the group stage with a perfect record and then defeated Italian side Vicenza 4:1.
The final match brought an unexpected twist, as Turkish teams were absent from the final. Wisła faced CD Flamencos Amputados Sur, a formidable opponent. After an early goal from Przemysław Świercz, Flamencos equalized late in the game. Just as the match seemed headed for a draw, David Mendes scored the winning goal in the 48th minute, leading Wisła to a historic triumph. Wisła Kraków became the first team outside of Turkey to win the UEFA Amp Football Champions League!
National Team Contributions
The year also saw significant achievements for the Polish national teams. In early June, the Polish men’s team travelled to Evian for the European Championship. With strong performances from Wisła players, the team secured a 1:0 win over England in the bronze medal match, replicating their previous success at international tournaments.
The Polish women’s team also earned a bronze medal at the inaugural Women’s Amp Football World Cup in Barranquilla, Colombia. They won 1:0 against Kenya in the third-place match, with key contributions from Weronika Nowotny and Justyna Bzdela, both of whom are Wisła Kraków players.
See you once again in 2025!
