In Memory of Franciszek Smuda: A Pillar of Polish Football Leaves Us

The news of this tragedy has spread deeply throughout Kraków and the Polish football community. After a battle with illness, Franciszek Smuda, one of Poland's most esteemed and experienced football coaches, passed away at the age of 76.

Following a football career that included stints with teams like Odra Wodzisław Śląski, Ruch Chorzów, Stal Mielec, Piast Gliwice, and Legia Warszawa, as well as playing in the USA and Germany, Smuda transitioned to coaching, where he made a significant impact on future generations of players.

He successfully imparted his knowledge at Wisła Kraków, leading the team to the Polish Championship in the 1998/1999 season. Smuda returned to manage Wisła twice, in 2001/2002 and from 2013 to 2015. His coaching résumé also includes other prominent clubs such as Widzew Łódź, Legia Warszawa, Lech Poznań, Stal Mielec, and the Polish national team.

On behalf of the owners, management, staff, players, and employees of Wisła Kraków, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

Rest in peace, Coach. Wisła will never forget you!
