Biedrzycki after #WISPGM: I’m glad there’s humility in the team

Another round of matches in the 1 Liga is behind us. This time, the White Star faced a very strong Pogoń Grodzisk Mazowiecki side at home. Once again, it was the team from Kraków who came out on top, maintaining a perfect record in the competition so far. After the match, we spoke with Wiktor Biedrzycki. Here’s what he had to say:

“It was definitely a tough match. We scored the first goal, but then conceded from a set piece quite quickly. Still, I’m happy with the way we responded, taking the lead again and then extending it. What we lacked was control of the game, to go greedily for a fourth goal and kill the match off. Later we conceded again, which made for some unnecessary nerves,” the Wisła defender began his post-match analysis.

Biedrzycki also commented on today’s opponent, acknowledging their quality: “I think it’s no coincidence they’ve picked up seven points in four matches,” he said, adding: “We keep telling ourselves that we have to approach every opponent with the right determination and never underestimate anyone. If we do, we won’t win just by standing around. I’m glad there’s humility in the team and that we work hard during the week. The first twenty minutes should have been better from us, especially at home. But three points are always good, and we should be happy that we have a perfect record after four rounds.”

Wisła Kraków now face a longer break from league action. How did Biedrzycki react to that? “I think every footballer prefers the break between matches to be as short as possible, but I think it’ll do us good that our next game is in over a week. We’ll catch our breath and prepare for the match against Znicz Pruszków,” he said.

Despite the defeat, today’s opponent put in a strong performance, often forcing the Wisła defence into action — something Biedrzycki noticed. “We have to be responsible. Everyone has their man to mark 1-on-1, and we need to take responsibility for that and help each other out. That’s an area we can improve on. I think in future matches, situations like this shouldn’t happen,” he commented.

Sunday’s match ended well for Wisła Kraków, but it was played in high temperatures, which affected both teams’ stamina. “No team would fail to feel the effects of such weather. But it’s all in the head, you have to push through those tough moments, because the conditions were the same for both teams, and we had the ball for longer,” the defender noted, adding: “Pogoń had to run more. In conditions like today, the team needs to show its intelligence. We have to keep the ball, switch it from one side to the other, to force the opponent to run and wear themselves out,” he concluded.
